Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training

The Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training is a nationally recognised qualification that provides the knowledge, understanding and skills to teach, and develop a range of personal qualities and attributes required for teaching, assessing and supporting learners. The course covers wider professional practice, theories, principles and models in education as well as teaching, learning and assessment in education.

The Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training DTLLS is suitable for teachers, trainers and tutors working in further education, adult and community learning or work-based training within public, private, voluntary or community organisations. Once completed, after 6 months experience, this qualification will allow you to apply for the QTLS status enabling you to become a qualified teacher.

This qualification replaces the old DTLLS course.


PLEASE NOTE - Sadly we are unable to take people from the USA and Canada for online courses due to restrictions in insurance cover for schools in the UK - however all other countries are accepted.

Who is this qualification for?

The Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training DTLLS is for anyone looking to teach in the further education sector, or within their own specialist role. It is suitable for teachers, trainers and tutors working in further education, adult and community learning or work-based training within public, private, voluntary or community organisations.


It is suitable for:


• Those who work or who want to work as teachers/trainers in the further education and skills sector.
• Those who are in a teaching/training role or who have just started a teaching/training role and can access 100 hours teaching practice
• Those who are not in a teaching/training role but can access 100 hours teaching practice
• Those who are seeking career progression in their area of work
• Assessors who want to achieve a teaching/training qualification
• Those who have completed the Level 3 Award in Education and Training, or Award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector, and want to progress further
• Those who have completed the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training or the Level 4 Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector, and want to progress further
The course is a natural progression for those learners that have already achieved levels 3 or 4. However, learners with the required experience can also enroll straight on to the level 5 course.

Course Requirements


Learners must meet the following minimum criteria:


• Reading and communication skills should be adequate to meet the requirements of the training.
• Do not have a criminal background which prevents them working, with young people or vulnerable adults, as a teacher.
• Hold a relevant qualification at a level above that of their learners; ideally at least Level 3 in their area of specialism
• Minimum core of literacy, language, numeracy and ICT. The minimum core of literacy, language, numeracy and ICT details the knowledge, understanding and personal skills in English, mathematics and ICT expected of all teachers in the sector.


Learners will also need:

✓ Level 3 teaching qualification or equivalent/ or some previous academic experience

✓ Access to the required 100 hours teaching practice whilst on the course

✓ To be at least 19 years of age
Is this the right teaching qualification for me?

The Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training will enable you to work in a teaching role and progress on to gain full QTLS status (Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills).

The course will prepare students to teach in a wide range of contexts including further, private, adult or community education or work-based learning.

Learners who successfully complete this qualification will take an analytical and practical approach to all aspects of planning, delivering and assessing inclusive teaching and learning. Whilst doing this, learners will embed theories and principles in education and training and demonstrate them in their own teaching practice.


Course Overview

The qualification covers the knowledge and skills required by teachers/trainers in the further education and skills sector, such as:

• Teaching, learning and assessment in education and training
• Developing teaching learning and assessment in education and training
• Theories, principles and models of education and training
• Wider professional practice and development in education and training

To achieve the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training, learners must achieve a minimum of 120 credits across various units. You be fully guided and supported by your tutor through these units. In general, the course is comprised of 7 Units where assignments/evidence gathering and research take place to meet the learning outcomes, 100 hours teaching practice and 8 assessed observations:

What will I need to do to complete the course?


You will need to provide evidence that you have met all the learning outcomes required for this course. This will include:

• Assignments, research and evidence gathering: to evidence the knowledge based criteria. You will complete your unit assignments and be fully guided and supported by your tutor

• Practice Requirements: there is a requirement for a minimum of 100 hours of teaching practice for this qualification. Teaching hours and lesson observations will be carried out at your chosen place (e.g. private training provider, School, College etc.) with a verified assessor (e.g. a fully qualified teacher) observing you. You will need to arrange this but we can support you with how to do this.

• Observation Requirements: there is a requirement for a minimum of eight observations of practice. Your 100 hours teaching practice (including the 8 observations) must be to groups of no less than 2 learners in a classroom, 3 or above would be ideal.

An example of work you will need to complete for the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training is: Meeting all the learning outcomes for each unit through assignments, research and evidence gathering, 100 teaching hours practice (teaching you have done 3 months prior to starting the course may be taken into account), 8 assessed lesson observations (including lesson plans).
You will be fully supported and guided by your tutor throughout the duration of the course and they will be easily contactable should you need their support.



When will I receive the course information so that I can start?

After paying your initial deposit to Gateway Workshops, you will receive a course confirmation within 24 hours from your course tutor. This will contain full course details and further payment information.

You will then be required to set up an instalment plan or make payment in full to your tutor. Once your tutor has received the initial course payment or payment in full, you will receive an email notification and link to the online material.

You can start your course as soon as you receive the online link.



How long does this course take to complete?

The Total Qualification Time (as set out by TQUK) is 1200 hours. This course takes approximately 9 months to a year to complete, depending on the time you have.

This course is approved and regulated by TQUK. TQUK are an Ofqual recognised Awarding organisation, providing a wide range of vocational qualifications to FE Colleges and private training providers.


As an Ofqual recognised Awarding organisation, all of TQUK's qualifications are guaranteed to conform to a high standard.


This qualification has been mapped to the relevant Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS), National Occupational Standards (NOS), and sits on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF)
On successful completion of this course, you will achieve the Ofqual recognised, Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET).


What could this qualification lead to?

This qualification allows learners to progress into employment as teachers or trainers, allowing the learner to apply for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills status (QTLS) in the post-16 sector, if you choose. The course is nationally accredited (RQF) and Ofqual regulated, gaining you a nationally recognised teaching qualification.
This qualification opens doors within further education colleges and enables learners to apply for teaching positions with the confidence that they are already qualified and experienced teachers. You could look to work in any of the following:

- Public sector organisations
- Private sector organisations
- Further Education, Adult and Community Education

Will I have help during the course?

Yes, you will be provided with the information for your tutor in your course confirmation and welcome email. Your tutor will be there to support and guide you throughout the duration of your course.
Where does the training take place?

The course will take place in the comfort of your own home and in your chosen training school. All material for your qualification will be uploaded to an e-learning platform. This can be accessed from anywhere, provided you have access to the internet. However, your 100 teaching hours and lesson observations will be held at your chosen place.


Do I need to attend anywhere to complete this course?

Your 100 teaching hours and lesson observations will be held at your chosen place. However, the rest of the course you can complete at your convenience, in the comfort of your own home


Where can I do my teaching hours and lesson observations?

You will need to contact a private training provider, local School or College (for example) to see if you can help support their classes and gain your teaching hours and lesson observations. The teacher you work with will need to be a fully qualified teacher/trainer. Teachers are often more than happy to have teacher trainers supporting their classes. Your tutor can help you with any information you need prior to making contact.

Is the course accredited and professionally recognised?
